Candidates set for Hanna's seat in Congress

The candidates to replace the retiring Rep. Richard Hanna (R-Barneveld) are now set -- and there was an unexpected change.

New York's 22nd Congressional District was shaping up to have two contested primaries. But the New York State Board of Elections said Democrat David Gordon, a former member of the Oneida County Legislature, didn’t get enough valid signatures. That leaves Broome County legislator Kim Myers as the only Democrat running.

But here are three Republicans who will run in the primary. One is George Phillips from Broome County, a teacher at Seton Catholic High School in Binghamton. Last month, he told Binghamton public radio station WSKG that one challenge is getting voters aware that there’s a primary election on June 28.

"We have high school graduations the weekend before. People are getting ready for vacations," he said.

Phillips is running against Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney from Oneida County and Madison County businessman Steve Wells for the Republican nomination. The district includes the cities of Binghamton, Cortland and Utica.
