Job Opening: Development Director

WRVO Public Media, a non-profit radio and online media service of the State University of New York at Oswego, is searching for our next Director of Development and Member Services.  The person in this position will be the chief fundraising officer for our organization, and will conceive, plan and implement fundraising strategies for WRVO.  The successful candidate will have demonstrated success in professional fundraising.  He/she will be poised, self-motivated, creative, outgoing, well-organized and collegial.  The person in this position must be able to meet deadlines and demonstrate excellent writing and communication skills.  The Director of Development and Member Services will supervise the corporate sales and membership staffs, and interact daily with donors, underwriters, university officials and other WRVO stakeholders.  This person reports to the WRVO General Manager.

WRVO Public Media’s substantial donor base, while primarily concentrated in the Syracuse, NY area, spans the entire 20-county upstate region reached by WRVO’s network of FM transmitters.  Revenues also flow from hundreds of corporate and institutional program underwriters, foundation grants, in-kind services, fundraising events and other activities.  The person in this position will oversee all these areas and will have primary responsibility for administering related daily workflows in collaboration with WRVO staff.

Responsibilities

The Director of Development and Member Services oversees all aspects of WRVO’s fundraising efforts, concentrating in the following areas:

  1. Individual Giving:  includes cultivating, receiving and tracking listener contributions, major gifts and planned giving, along with supervising the daily activities of the membership department.
  2. Underwriting:  includes supervising the corporate sales staff, setting and evaluating local underwriting goals, and creating long-term strategies for corporate support.
  3. Grants:  includes writing proposals for - and administering - program grants.
  4. Events:  includes working with other staff in determining strategies for and implementing outreach and membership events.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or greater
  • At least 2-3 years demonstrated success in professional fundraising experience, preferably in the non-profit sector
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience in working with a membership/fundraising database
  • A detail-oriented personality, with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, set goals and evaluate performance
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills

Salary

Commensurate with experience.

About WRVO

WRVO Public Media distributes locally-produced news and public affairs content along with NPR, CBC, BBC, APM and PRI programs over radio and via online streaming players and mobile apps.  Studios and offices are located on the SUNY-Oswego campus at Oswego, NY and at the SUNY-Oswego Branch campus in Syracuse.  Broadcast transmitters are located in Clayton, Cortland, Geneva, Hamilton, Ithaca, Norwich, Oswego, Syracuse, Utica and Watertown.  WRVO has approximately 15 full and part-time employees with an annual budget approximating $3 million.  Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
