Hasbro Redesigns Easy-Bake Oven, Light Bulb Gone

DAVID GREENE, host: Today's last word in business is Easy-Bake. You remember. That's the famous kids' oven a lot of us used. Well, it's now nearing its 50th anniversary.

(SOUNDBITE OF EASY-BAKE OVEN COMMERCIAL)

UNIDENTIFIED CHILD: I love my Easy-Bake Oven.

UNIDENTIFIED MAN: You know how to work it, and all?

UNIDENTIFIED CHILD: Of course. You just put the Easy-Bake mix in here, and when it's done, it comes out here, like this. Easy as pie.

GREENE: Well, Hasbro has just introduced its latest redesign of the Easy-Bake Oven. The new model looks kind of like a curvy, purple toaster oven.

STEVE INSKEEP, host: And the more shocking change is that the incandescent light bulb, the old-style light bulb used to bake the little goodies is gone. Can't bake with those energy-efficient, compact fluorescent bulbs, so Hasbro put in a heating element similar to what you'd find in a real oven.

GREENE: But it means turning up the heat on the price. The new model is 50 bucks, $20 more than the old light bulb that was at the Easy-Bake model.

That's the business news on MORNING EDITION, from NPR News. I'm David Greene.

INSKEEP: And I'm Steve Inskeep. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
