SUNY Oswego is expanding to Syracuse.

The state university has had an extension site on Clinton Square in downtown Syracuse for a little over six years. Now the New York State Board of Regents just approved designating SUNY Oswego's Metro Center a "branch campus." That means starting in fall 2016, SUNY Oswego student will now be able to complete degree and certificate programs in Syracuse. Currently, students are required to take a course at the main campus.

SUNY Oswego President Deborah Stanley says this will fill provide an additional higher education opportunity for students who work or live in Syracuse, and a more affordable one.

"They need the public price point in order to advance. And that really hasn't been associated in Syracuse before with a campus that has a full recognizable name and a quality experience," said Stanley.

Only a limited number of a degrees and certificates will be offered at the SUNY Metro Center. The bachelor degrees are meant primarily for transfer students who want to complete their upper division classes there.

"They can stop in during the middle of the day, they can take some online courses, they can get their counseling there about how to complete their degrees. So we're really looking at degree completers. We are not competing in any kind of fashion with the existing opportunities that are in Syracuse. We're hoping to compliment all of those opportunities," Stanley said.

The degrees offered include business, health, education and public justice.
