U.S. Senator Charles Schumer will be one of the featured speakers Wednesday night at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. The senior senator from New York says the 2012 election offers voters a clear choice.When voters mark their ballots this November, they'll be making a choice about what direction this country should go in says Schumer, the third highest ranking member of the U.S. Senate.
"This election could shape up as a very powerful election, where there are two different viewpoints about where America should go and how to help the middle class," he said.
Schumer says Democrats need to lay out their policies on education and infrastructure, while remaining fiscally prudent, in order to get the middle-class vote.
"And if we can have a debate over that, what is the role of government, what kind of tax policy should we have, what should we do with Medicare and Social Security, that'll be very good," Schumer said.
He also says he's glad that the GOP, and particularly its vice presidential nominee, didn't pull back on what is turning out to be one of the most controversial issues of the campaign.
"Paul Ryan did not back off on their Medicare plan, and I think that was a good thing in drawing a line in the national debate."
Schumer contends that the Medicare divide could provide Democrats with a winning issue this November.
