The state Gaming Facility Location Board has selected three proposals for casinos in in economically distressed communities in upstate New York in Sullivan, Schenectady and Seneca Counties.
The Seneca County site selected was the proposal by Wilmorite Corporation to build Lago Resort and Casino off the New York State Thruway in the small town of Tyre.
The Rochester-based developer says the $425 million dollar project will create 1,800 jobs in its casino that will include 2,000 slot machiens. There were cheers in the room when the board announced each site selection, including Tyre.
The Finger Lakes town of Tyre has about 900 people. Organized protests had fought against the plan.
The board could have recommended four casino licenses, but decided not to amid an increasingly saturated gambling market.
Before building can go forward, background checks and environmental reviews will be completed, and the licenses must be formally awarded by the New York State Gaming Commission.
