State Trooper Jeremy VanNostrand was killed in a crash outside a trooper station in the Mohawk valley Monday

FULTONVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — A veteran state trooper arriving for work was killed Tuesday in a chain-reaction crash outside a trooper station in the Mohawk Valley, New York State Police officials.

State Police Superintendent George P. Beach II said Trooper Jeremy VanNostrand’s private vehicle was stopped in traffic waiting to turn into the station just outside the Montgomery County village of Fultonville around 7:45 a.m. when his vehicle was rear-ended by a box truck and pushed into oncoming traffic on state Route 5S.

A pickup truck then struck VanNorstrand’s vehicle, police said.

VanNostrand, 36, was taken to Albany Medical Center, where he died from his injuries, Beach said. The other drivers sustained minor injuries, police said.

Beach said VanNostrand was about to pull in to the trooper barracks known as the Fonda station to begin his shift when the accident occurred.

VanNostrand was a six-year state police veteran who previously worked eight years as a correction officer for the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

His survivors include his wife and their 6-year-old daughter, his parents and his brothers. Funeral arrangements were pending.

VanNostrand joined the state police in December 2016 and served in Orange, Sullivan and Washington counties before being assigned to the Fonda station, located 35 miles (56 kilometers) northwest of Albany.

Police said he was arriving at work from his home in neighboring Schenectady County when the box truck slammed into his vehicle at the station’s entrance. Snow and rain was moving through the area at the time, but troopers said it was too early in the investigation to determine a cause of the crash or if the box truck driver will be charged.

VanNostrand was "very aggressive" and "hard working," according to state police Maj. Robert Patnaude, commander of Troop G, which includes the Fonda station.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered that flags on all state government buildings be lowered to half-staff in VanNorstrand’s honor from Wednesday until his burial.
