The search for a missing 14-month-old boy in Wayne County has been suspended, but the investigation will continue.
That’s what Sheriff Barry Virts told reporters on Sunday afternoon, after 12 days of searching for Owen Hidalgo-Calderon.
Hundreds of searchers from several agencies have combed through an area around the farm where the toddler’s mother, Selena Hidalgo-Calderon lived with her boyfriend, Everado Donateo-Reyes.
Selena’s body was found in a wooded area of the farm on Joy Road in Sodus on May 24. At this point, Reyes is facing a charge of tampering with evidence, accused of moving her body. He has not been charged with killing her, but the investigation is continuing. He also faces federal immigration charges accused of coming back into the U.S. from Mexico illegally.
Hidalgo-Calderon is from Guatemala, and was an immigrant farmworker who had been seeking asylum.
Authorities say that with the exhaustive search that has been done on the property around the farm, it is not likely the boy’s body is there. But Virts emphasized the investigation will continue and he says they have the ability to quickly ramp up search efforts in that area if more clues are discovered.
Meantime there was a service Sunday at St. Gregory Church in Marion for Selena Hidalgo-Calderon.
According to the Workers’ Center of Central New York Selena’s family was in attendance at that service which is part of several remembrance events.
