Technical ‘glitch’ on election night delays results in Onondaga County

Democrats in Onondaga County wait for results to come in Tuesday night. A malfunction delayed displaying the results for 30-45 minutes.

More than 100,000 residents came out to vote Tuesday night in Onondaga County, a significant increase since the last county executive race was held in 2015. But posting the election night results became a problem for the Onondaga County Board of Elections.

Democratic Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny said a technical glitch from a vender the county uses, delayed displaying the results for 30-45 minutes.

“Had nothing to do with how we were tabulating results, had nothing to do with the votes themselves," Czarny said. "It had to do with the translating of data to the Results Caster, which does our fancy maps on election night.”

Czarny said the vender was unable to read the initial upload of data.

"While they were fixing that, we had the county IT go to an HTML website, so we could at least get some results posted," Czarny said. "About midway through the night, the vender has fixed part of the problem. But 100% of the results are now on the website.”

Czarny said it will take some time to figure out what exactly went wrong.
