This week: A historical look at medical trailblazers Blackwell and Nightingale

This "HealthLink on Air" podcast examines how far medicine has come since the days of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell and nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale.

Dr. Mike Magee -- a graduate of Syracuse's LeMoyne College and Upstate Medical University's College of Medicine, in 1973 -- contrasts medical education and practice in the Victorian era to that of today and explores the complex relationship between Blackwell and Nightingale. This year, Upstate is celebrating the 200th birthday of Blackwell, the first woman to graduate medical school in America. She attended Geneva Medical College, a predecessor to Upstate, in the late 1840s.

Also on this week's show, researcher Katja Reuter explores how an active community of patients with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases stays connected through social media during the pandemic.

Listen this Sunday, June 6 at 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. for more.
