Schweinfurth Summer Exhibits
The Schweinfurth Art center is offering three exhibitions this summer: "Made in NY 2021," "Threads Across Time," and "Harriet's World." The exhibits run from June 12 to Aug. 7, 2021.
"Made in NY" features 74 works of art from 69 artists who live all across New York state. Nearly 300 artists submitted pieces, which were chosen by jurors Sharon Louden, George Afedzi Hughes, and Hannah Frieser.
"Threads Across Time" features quilts made by fiber artist Sarah Bond and her foremothers, two of which were enslaved. Bond’s quilts are a visual link to her familial legacy. They are a record of a family reaching beyond slavery and across time to arrive at a place where the “modern” stands on the shoulders of the “traditional” and an artist stands shoulder to shoulder with the women who came before her.
In "Harriet's Legacy," Ithaca artist Terry Plater aims to convey the intergenerational history, value, and ownership of our collective American story as embodied in slavery and emancipation, the acknowledgement of Harriet Tubman as a local figure and national treasure. This exhibition by Terry Plater is part of the Emerging Artist Exhibition series in partnership with the Cayuga Museum of History & Art. One part of the exhibit will be on view at the Cayuga Museum and the other part will be on view in Gallery Julius at the Schweinfurth.
The galleries are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. Masks and social distancing are required.
