Local foundations pledge support for racial equity and social justice programs

Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties

The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties is asking the community for help with its racial equity and social justice initiative. Earlier this summer, the foundation approved a $10 million initiative to invest in programs that fight inequality.

Now, the group is asking residents to take the Mohawk Valley Equity Pledge to build support for programs that create more equity and fairness for everyone in the community.

"This is not just about issues with police and people of color," said Ron Cuccaro a member of the foundation's Board of Trustees. "This equality issue involves a lot of things. Hot spots for internet connections, childcare so mothers and fathers can work, workforce development."

The Mohawk Valley Equity Pledge hopes to build grassroots support for changes in racial equity and social justice.

In Syracuse, the Central New York Community Foundation also pledged $1 million this summer for community-based projects for the Black Community. This week, it awarded the first round of grants to local nonprofit organizations.
