Utica's Black Masons: A deep dive into a rediscovered photo from the History Center collection

Utica's Black Masons: A deep dive into a rediscovered photo from the History Center collection

Deep in the Oneida County History Center’s archives is a remarkable photo from the mid-1920s of a party at Hiram Lodge No. 18 Free & Accepted Masons. Fifty-three people from Utica’s African American community are dressed in their finest. Writer and researcher Deirdre Sinnott, author of “The First Mrs. Galway,” will present the facts about the lives of those partygoers and their families.

Several subjects were not named, and Sinnott hopes the audience will help identify these individuals. Rev. Sharon Baugh, pastor at Hope Chapel, the Mohawk Valley’s oldest Black church, will speak about the importance of studying Black history.
