Utica, New York – About 20-thousand residents of Oneida and Herkimer counties do not speak English as their native language.
This language barrier makes it difficult to obtain everyday services like medical, educational, social, and legal assistance.
The Multi-cultural Association of Medical Interpreters (MAMI) of central New York has launched a program to train interpreters to work in a variety of settings...including domestic and sexual violence situations.
WRVO's Allessandra Messore reports on how the organization known as "MAMI" is helping these non-English speaking residents.
