Thirty-six-year-old officer Christopher Walrath, who was one of six guards charged with second-degree murder, pleaded guilty Monday to first-degree manslaughter during a hearing in Utica.

Six guards are being charged with murder in the violent death of Robert Brooks at Marcy Correctional in December.

While Robert Ricks said it was imperative for lawmakers to address “the level of evilness, that level of unaccountability that takes place inside the prison system" following his son's death, he was hesitant to call for the removal of the state’s prison commissioner, Daniel Martuscello.
