Oswego, NY – Voters in the Town of Clay have approved a proposal that will merge the town's police department with the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department.
The vote passed by a more than 2-to-1 margin with more than 6,000 casting a vote. The final tally was 4,160 in favor of the merger and 1,865 against.
Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney says the merger could lead to more consolidation opportunities in the future.
Officials in the Town of Clay say the merger will cut taxes and could save as a much as $17 million over 10 years.
The transition is expected to be completed by July 7th.
