Syracuse China to Close

By Jason Smith

Oswego, NY – One of central New York's oldest manufacturers will close early next year, leaving close to 300 people without a job.

The Syracuse China Company, located in the Onondaga County Town of Salina will close at the end of March 2009.

The company's owner, Toledo, Ohio based Libbey Inc. says the factory is being closed to cut costs and improve operating efficiency.

In a statement, Libbey CEO John Meier said that "while considerable efforts have been made at Syracuse China to reduce costs, the operations continue to fall short of our strategic expectations."

Although the factory will close, the Syracuse China name will live on. Manufacturing operations will be moved overseas.
