Syracuse, NY – WRVO's Community Forum brings you into the discussion with a lively debate about topics of local concern. This episode:

How do recent veterans reintegrate in to CNY?
Many people who served in recent wars and their families are settling in Central New York, but what resources are available to help them reintegrate into the community?

Mark Nowakowski LMSW, graduated from Syracuse University in 2002 with a Masters Degree. He currently works as the HUD-VASH Coordinator and Healthcare for Homeless Veterans Outreach Social Worker for the Department of Veterans Affairs covering Madison, Herkimer and Oneida Counties.
Mark has been practicing in the field of social work for over 16 years in the areas of crisis intervention, children, family, individual and couples counseling. Currently serving CNY Veterans for the past three years helping them acclimate back into society by access their benefits, find housing, employment, medical and MH services both through the VA and in the community.

Steve Darman is the Director of Social Science Associates and has extensive experience working with local government and community based organizations to understand and address a variety of social problems, including prisoner reentry, veteran reentry, youth violence and gangs, homelessness and chronic homelessness.
He is the current Chair of the Mohawk Valley Homeless Veterans Task Force, and is a Vietnam- era Navy Reserve veteran. Steve is also an adjunct professor of sociology currently teaching a newly designed Veteran Reentry course at SUNY-IT in Utica, NY.

Cindy Picunas is a Veterans Program Coordinator for the New York State Department of Labor, Division of Employment and Workforce Solutions. In this capacity, she coordinates employment and training services to veterans, transitioning service members and eligible spouses. She has served in various capacities within the Veterans Program over the past ten years and is a veteran of the United States Air Force.
