SUNY Upstate VP retiring amid controversy
SUNY Upstate Medical University's vice president for administration and finance is retiring effective Thursday, according to the Albany Times Union. Steven Brady was the No. 2 officer at upstate and the announcement comes less than a week after President David Smith resigned. Brady was at Upstate for 45 years, and was also an executive director of MedBest, a company that allegedly provided extra payment to Smith without permission from SUNY. State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli launched an audit of the business relationship between upstate and MedBest.
Gillibrand may revise sexual assault proposal
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is considering revising her proposal to combat assault in the military to focus solely on the offenses of rape and sexual assault. The Democrat from New York says she may make the changes to build support among undecided senators. Gillibrand has pushed for removing commanders from the process of deciding whether serious crimes in the military go to trial.
Saratoga County residents opposed to potential casino in their area
Residents in one of the potential locations for a casino in New York state are expressing their opposition. Gov. Andrew Cuomo's plan to authorize seven Las Vegas-style casinos was approved in a statewide referendum last week, and calls for one casino to be built in the Albany-Saratoga region. Saratoga County officials have canceled a vote Thursday on the issue, and voters from the city, county and all of the surrounding counties rejected the casino proposition. The process requires local support before a site is chosen, but under state law, a community can't block a casino. An online petition by opponents is also underway.
