Computer chip manufacturer to build new R&D facility in Saratoga County

The computer chip manufacturer GlobalFoundries has announced that it will move forward with plans to construct a $2 billion research and development center in Saratoga County.

GlobalFoundries will soon begin construction on 90,000 square feet of new cleanroom space at its campus in Malta, which is known as Fab 8.

The new facility will be called the Technology Development Center. In a statement, the company cited a shift in the computing industry from PCs to mobile devices, which has driven demand for its chips.

GlobalFoundries received an unprecedented state incentive package, worth over a billion dollars, to locate in upstate New York. Fab 8 came online a year ago and it now employs about 1,600 people.

No new incentives were provided by the state for this facility, which is expected to create 500 new jobs.
