Four more Onondaga County residents died in the last day, County Executive Ryan McMahon announced Saturday, bringing the total number of deaths from COVID-19 in the county to 69.
McMahon said three of the people who died were in hospitals, one was in a nursing home. That brings the number of nursing home deaths to 22.
Nine people have died in the last two days. Most of the deaths involved people with underlying medical conditions.
“The mortality rate is directly tied to who is getting sick. This isn’t going to change,” McMahon said. “We’re going to lose more life. Because of who this is affecting, the reality is that we’re going to lose more people.”
There are now 1,329 positive cases of COVID-19 in the county. 694 people have recovered, leaving 588 active cases.
52 people are currently hospitalized, down 12 from the day before. McMahon said that is because some elder care facilities were dropping people off at area hospitals that did not need hospitalization. 11 people are currently in critical condition.
During his briefing Saturday, McMahon said a Centro bus driver has tested positive for COVID-19. The driver wore a face mask while driving and most passengers did not come in close contact with the driver. But McMahon said two passengers boarding with mobility devices did come in close contact with the driver. The passengers were also wearing masks.
Anyone who rode the following Centro routes on the following days and times should self-monitor for symptoms.
