This week: ‘Happy Period,’ neurodegeneration research, retinal regeneration

Two students at Upstate Medical University launched "Happy Period Syracuse," part of a social movement designed to provide menstrual supplies to women and teens who are poor or homeless.

Madison Searles is studying public health, and her sister, Quinn Searles is a student in the physician assistant program. Together, they explain the project and its goals, how they got involved and how others can, too -- by following "We are #happyperiod syracuse" on Facebook or "@wearehappyperiod" on Instagram.

Also on “HealthLink on Air,” Upstate scientist Jessica Henty-Ridilla tells about her research into neurodegeneration, and ophthalmology professor Abigail Hackam discusses the potential for retinal regeneration. Hackam was in Syracuse to give a lecture. She is a professor of ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Listen this Sunday, August 9 at 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. for "HealthLink on Air."
