Open Waste Burning

By Chris Ulanowski

Oswego, NY – An environmental group is urging the New York State to prohibit the burning of garbage in barrels or refuse heaps. The practice is common in rural areas. The group says "opening burning" is contaminating the food supply with dioxin and other toxic particles.
WRVO's Chris Ulanowski spoke to Cancer Action's Donald Hassig about the issue. The New York State Farm Bureau issued this statement in response to Cancer Action: "Currently, if a municipality has less than 20,000 residents, they are able to enact their own, local, legislation to ban open burning. That said, we do not see a need for state wide legislation when the local government has the ability to make their own laws on this issue."
