Sepsis in children, late-onset bipolar disorder, vision research

Upstate's Healthlink on Air - June 29, 2025

Sepsis is a medical emergency in which your body overreacts to an infection. Melissa Schafer, MD, explains how the disease manifests in children and the efforts in New York state hospitals to help children survive in this week's episode of "HealthLink on Air." Schafer is director of pediatric hospital medicine at the Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital.

Also on the show, people who are diagnosed with bipolar disorder after the age of 50 have what is known as late-onset bipolar disorder, and its treatment presents some unique challenges. Luba Leontieva, MD, PhD, discusses this complex diagnosis and how it can be treated. She is an associate professor in the department of psychiatry at Upstate and the director of the inpatient psychiatric unit for Upstate University Hospital.

A vision researcher and his team are studying the regeneration and protection of the nervous system. Levi Todd, PhD, explains his quest to learn how to restore sight when the retina is damaged by disease or injury.

Listen to Healthlink on Air every Sunday at 6 a.m. on WRVO.
