An Erie Canal Museum tradition could be a way to find festive fun during the winter holiday. The 39th annual Gingerbread House Display is on view through Jan. 12.
With displays made by community members, the gingerbread gallery is a tradition that goes back decades, something museum Development and Communications Manager Taylor Westerland said is a great thing to see.
"You're never too young or too old to be surprised and delighted by the creativity and the ingenuity of our fellow community members," Westerland said.
The tradition is also the biggest fundraiser for the Erie Canal Museum, bringing in funding that helps the museum year-round. Westerland said this year's display is one of the biggest yet.
"This is just a really big year," Westerland said. "We have 47 creations on display, last year we had 38. We had trouble finding space for everyone, which is a great problem to have."
Submissions in four categories, youth, general, senior and confectioners, are eligible for prizes. Community members can submit designs as early as August but Westerland said it's never too early to start making a design plan. Plans are still developing for next year's 40th anniversary display.
