OSWEGO, N.Y. (AP) — A state judge has ordered a hold on the certification of election results in the tight race for New York’s 22nd Congressional District that stretches from Lake Ontario to the Pennsylvania border.
A state supreme court judge in Oswego County issued an injunction on Tuesday blocking all the eight counties included in the district from certifying results.
Republican Claudia Tenney is vying to reclaim her seat in Congress from incumbent U.S. Rep. Anthony Brindisi, the Democrat.
Tenney led Brindisi by more than 28,000 votes on election night. As absentee ballots were counted, Tenney’s lead shrunk to less than 200 votes. Over the last two days, elections officials in the district have gone over challenged absentee ballots.
Attorneys for both candidates questioned county election officials in court Tuesday about how they handled absentee and affidavit ballots, and whether sticky notes used to mark questioned ballots in Oneida County were still attached once sent to court.
The judge’s order came after a request from an attorney for Tenney’s campaign. More legal motions are due Monday.
