Onondaga County will begin going into schools this week and offering coronavirus vaccines to eligible teens. Officials are planning a pop-up clinic at the Baldwinsville School District on Thursday, according to County Executive Ryan McMahon. He said that district, one of the biggest in the county, was chosen after a survey showed the most interest from families and district officials, in getting shots in teens’ arms.
"You want to try, if you are going to be out, get 200 to 300 shots,” McMahon said. “That way, you’re utilizing your infrastructure the best way. And I think there are some other districts we could probably get close to that, and we’ll do that. The smaller ones, we’ll team up, and if there are transportation issues, we’ll work with them on that."
Sixteen and 17-year-olds only became eligible to receive the vaccine earlier this month. And since the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is the only one approved for that age group, the county has been holding back some of that particular vaccine for this population.
