Get ready for some hot weather to head our way.

Jessica Spaccio, a climatologist with the Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell University, said we should see temperatures starting to hit 90 degrees going into next week. And after a cooler May with a lot of precipitation, it may feel especially warm.

"I think where sometimes the temperatures were even close to normal, just not having that sunshine definitely made it feel cooler because we had so many cooler days,” she said. “It's been very wet, so it hasn't quite felt summer-like, yet, but that is definitely about to change."

Spaccio said central New York should also expect high humidity with possible heat indexes in the upper 90s or triple digits. Urban areas may feel the heat the most.

"The urban areas just can't cool down as well,” Spaccio said. “All of the impervious surfaces, pavements, buildings, really absorb that heat and make those areas as much as 10 degrees warmer than the countryside counterparts."

She said prepare to take precautions.

"Look at what your plans are. Can you stay inside and stay out of the sunshine? Make sure if you are outside that you're taking breaks, you're drinking water, you're using sunscreen. Check on pets. Check on elderly people," Spaccio said.

Typically, Syracuse has two days in June that reach 90 degrees, but last year there were five.
