Former Republican Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle says she is not going to challenge Democrat Dan Maffei for her old seat during the upcoming 2014 election cycle. In a written statement, Buerkle said deciding not to run again for the 24th Congressional District was a difficult decision, but the right one for her at this time. She also said she plans to remain politically involved.
Buerkle only served one term in Congress, beating Rep. Dan Maffei in 2010 to represent the Syracuse-area district. In 2012, the election for the seat was a repeat race, pitting Maffei and Buerkle against each other again, with Maffei becoming the victor this time.
Earlier this year, Buerkle was nominated by President Barack Obama to serve as a commissioner on the Consumer Product Safety Commission. She began that position in July. The appointment goes through October 2018.
