Voters in the Town of Salina will be asked to approve a referendum on November 8 to buy and renovate the Burdick Chevrolet site on Old Liverpool Road so the town can move its offices there. Town Supervisor Mark Nicotra says the town could consolidate its offices and highway department on that property for about $6 million versus spending $8 million to repair its current properties.
"Ultimately, we are giving the taxpayers that decision," said Nicotra. "We don't want to force it down their throats. We want them to evaluate all the information that's available and make the best decision for themselves."
But the town offices would not be the only thing affected by a possible move. County North Children's Center leases space in the Town's office building. If voters approve the referendum and the Town moves to a new location, the children's center might be forced to move as well. The center has been in the same location since 1984, and board member Jennifer Pawalczyk says it's irreplaceable.
"There are a lot of resources her that you don't find at most child care centers like the gymnasium downstairs and an enormous playground," said Pawalczyk. "It's a great facility and we love coming here. We've had all three of our children come through here."
If the town moves and sells its current building, it's possible a new owner could keep the children's center on as a tenant.
