Five more Onondaga County residents have died from COVID-19 in the last day, County Executive Ryan McMahon announced Friday, bringing the total number of deaths in the county to 65.
Three of the people who died were hospitalized, two were in nursing homes. That brings the total number of nursing home deaths from COVID-19 to 21. The total number of cases in the county is up to 1,284. 64 people were hospitalized, 13 are in critical condition. McMahon said the increase in hospitalizations is a result of nursing homes dropping residents who have COVID-19, regardless of their symptoms, to area hospitals. McMahon expects those numbers to drop off soon.
"We need to remember everybody we've lost in this process, not just to COVID-19, but everybody we've lost in the community where their families have been unable to grieve together," McMahon said.
