There has been another big uptick in the number of positive cases of COVID-19 in Onondaga County. County Executive Ryan McMahon announced Thursday there are now 111 cases, up from 81 the day before. 16 people are hospitalized, four are in critical condition.
McMahon attributed the uptick in positive cases to a large number of test results that came back in the last 24 hours.
"We had a big day with test results coming back. We've had 2,200 tests, we have 111 positives. That means we got 675 tests back since yesterday. Some of the backlog from the first three days at the testing triage site are being addressed," McMahon said.
Of the 111 cases, 57% are under the age of 50. McMahon said he's still getting reports of people not following social distancing guidelines.
"We are taking 911 calls related to social distancing. If a business is open and it shouldn't be, or if people are congregating in close proximity or there are large gatherings, we will take care of it," he said.
McMahon said hospitals in the county are in good shape, but should the need arise for surge capacity, there will be a site at Manley Field House on the Syracuse University campus.
"We will have that surge site, if necessary. We hope don't ever have to have that surge site. We will also begin planning for additional surge sites, if that's the case," he said.
