Three more people died in Onondaga County from COVID-19 in the last day, County Executive Ryan McMahon announced Thursday. All three were women with underlying health conditions. One was in her 60s, the other two in their 80s, McMahon said. This brings the total number of deaths in the county to 33.

McMahon said there are now 920 cases in the county, up 44 from the day before. 38 people are currently hospitalized, eight are in critical condition. 25 of the 44 new cases are affiliated with senior living facilities.

McMahon attributed the increase in positive cases to proactive testing.

"We've now seen at least 50 asymptomatic cases from our proactive testing," McMahon said. "These are individuals who would never go get a test. Why? Because they aren't showing any symptoms. But there's the potential, not a guarantee, but a potential for them to be able to spread the virus to other individuals. So now we know."

Onondaga County health officials also said Thursday there's been a potential exposure of COVID-19 in two stores in the county. An Employee at Cricket Wireless in DeWitt and a shopper who was at the Price Chopper on Erie Blvd. in East Syracuse. Anyone who was at those stores at the following day/time should self-monitor for symptoms.
