"Carrie: The Musical," based on Stephen King’s classic novel, arrives at the SUNY Cortland Performing Arts Department this fall. Directed by Deena Conley and music direction by Ben Kapilow, the production follows Carrie White, a bullied high school student whose telekinetic powers erupt in devastating fashion on the night of her senior prom. The musical blends a rock-infused score with a story of isolation, cruelty and the search for belonging. Performances take place in the Dowd Fine Arts Center’s Lab Theatre, an intimate space that puts audiences close to the action. The production runs Oct. 30, 31 and Nov. 5-7, with matinees Nov. 1 and 8.

Master Pryor’s Tae Kwon Do (MPTKD) will host its annual Kickathon on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Oswego High School, located at 2 Buccaneer Blvd., Oswego, NY 13126.

MPTKD believes that success is built on more than strong kicks and sharp forms—it is also built on discipline, focus, and dedication in the classroom. This event benefits an academic scholarship fund created to support students who are working hard both in martial arts and in their education, helping the next generation of leaders, black belts, and scholars reach their full potential.

The family-friendly community event features a variety of entertainment, activities, and local vendors, including:

• Taekwondo Demo Team Performance: 1 p.m.
• Activities & Entertainment: Face painting, door prizes, raffles, a 50/50 raffle, and a bake sale.
• Food: Local food trucks.

In this eight-week series, students will learn the foundational skills for throwing pots on the wheel. They will learn centering, basic throwing techniques, trimming, glazing, and more to begin their journey with clay. While this class is geared toward beginners, students who have some introductory skills that they wish to expand on are welcome. Price includes 25 pounds of clay, access to the clay studio outside of class, and use of community tools and glazes.

In this eight-week series, students will learn the foundational skills for throwing pots on the wheel. In this six-session series, students will learn about the versatile drawing medium of charcoal. From its wide range of expressive possibilities to its intricate shading and texture potential, charcoal has a little bit for everyone. The class will focus on a wipe out technique working in a step-by-step process using layers to capture a full range of dynamic lighting in students’ artwork.

Fiber artists of all kinds are invited to join us for a weekend of creativity at our biannual retreat. You will have full access to both of our spacious studios: our sewing studio and our dye/wet studio. Lunch is complimentary. Just bring yourself and your work!

Grab a sketchbook and pencil and get ready to learn more about the practice of sketching with Hiram Cray, a professional artist and educator. Learn how to capture on paper the amazing properties of glass or simply follow along and discover the Corning Museum of Glass through the eyes of an artist, Fridays through July 24 to August 28. Note: Friday, August 21 is the only Friday this event will not be held.

Participants of all ages are welcome and will meet in the Admissions Lobby. Paper and pencils will be provided. Free with admission.
