Can I vote early in New York?
Early voting for the 2026 General Election has concluded. Early voting ran from Saturday, Oct. 24 through Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026.
If you did not vote during the early voting window, you must cast your ballot in person at your assigned local polling place on Election Day (Tuesday, Nov. 3) or return an Early Mail or Absentee Ballot.
How do I vote by mail: Early Mail Ballot vs. Absentee Ballot
New York offers two mail voting options: Early Mail Ballots (no excuse required) and Absentee Ballots (for voters away from their county, or with an illness/disability).
Deadlines to Apply:
- Online or by mail: The deadline to submit an online or mail application was Oct. 24.
- In person: Monday, Nov. 2, 2026, was the final day to apply for and receive an Early Mail or Absentee Ballot in person at your county Board of Elections office.
Deadlines to Return Your Ballot:
- In Person: Hand-deliver your completed ballot to your local county Board of Elections office or to any Election Day polling place in your county by 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
- By Mail: Your ballot must be postmarked by Tuesday, Nov. 3 and received by your county Board of Elections by Nov. 10.
Note on postmarks: If mailing your ballot today or on Election Day, request a hand postmark at the post office counter or drop off your ballot in person at a polling location or Board of Elections office to ensure it is postmarked on time.
Changed your mind? If you requested a mail ballot but decide to vote in person, you can cast an affidavit ballot at an early voting site or Election Day poll site.
Do I need an ID to vote in New York?
No. New York does not require photo ID to vote. The only exception is for first-time voters who registered by mail without providing identification; they may be asked to show ID the first time they vote.
