Community Calendar

In collaboration with the Center for Aging Resources and Enrichment at LeMoyne College, NOPL will be hosting this 4-part discussion around the book “The Years of Ripening" by Joyce Rupp. Books are available for pickup at the North Syracuse branch. Limited to 10 participants.

Registration is required on the NOPL Event Calendar or call 315-458-6184. (Registration opens at noon on Friday, Sept. 18.)

Dates for this book group are October 2, 9, 16, & 23. Participants will receive a free book to begin before the discussion sessions and make a commitment to try to attend all four sessions.

"The Years of Ripening: Reflections on Aging in the Later Years" by Joyce Rupp, 2026: This book presents a candid and conversational style encouraging introspection and discussion about what it feels like to be an older adult — not always easy! Addressed to people 70+ rather than younger retirees, it considers the practical and spiritual perspectives for dealing with these later years when time has taken a toll, but, as we can learn, experience acceptance and even joy are very possible.

Join us this summer for sketching in the galleries!

Grab a sketchbook and pencil and get ready to learn more about the practice of sketching with Hiram Cray, a professional artist and educator. Learn how to capture on paper the amazing properties of glass or simply follow along and discover the Corning Museum of Glass through the eyes of an artist, Fridays through July 24 to August 28. Note: Friday, August 21 is the only Friday this event will not be held.

Participants of all ages are welcome and will meet in the Admissions Lobby. Paper and pencils will be provided. Free with admission.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is back at The Smith this October with romance, thrills, laughs, and an interactive shadow cast!

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the ultimate movie experience, a mad mix of classic horror/sci-fi, super-charged sensuality and outrageous fantasy. This cult classic from 1975 features the story of an “ordinary” couple and an unforgettable night at the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a mad scientist from the planet Transexual, Transylvania. Brad and Janet have arrived on a special night, the night Dr. Furter’s “beautiful creature,” Rocky, the Adonis humanoid created for the release of Frank’s “tension,” was to be born.

The Smith wants attendees to enjoy this ultimate movie experience (including costumes and having your audience participation script memorized), but we do hope you’ll refrain from water spraying. It makes our mascara run and it ruins our nice big movie screen.

Rocky Horror goody bags – containing all items needed to participate along with the film – are available for purchase online in advance or at the bar prior to the show. Experience this iconic tale of good and evil brought to life with a live score performed by the Cloud Chamber Orchestra.

In this classic of silent cinema, the demon Mephisto (Emil Jannings) makes a bet with an archangel that a good man’s soul can be corrupted. Mephisto sets his sights on the thoughtful old alchemist Faust (Gösta Ekman), who is desperately trying to save his village from a plague. He is able to help the villagers, thanks to Mephisto, but further dealings with the devil lead Faust on a decadent downward spiral. Can he redeem his soul before it’s too late?

This event features live musical accompaniment by the acclaimed Cloud Chamber Orchestra performing as a trio. Renowned for their inventive and improvisational scores, the ensemble will enhance the action-packed drama with a captivating live performance, bringing this classic film to life in a whole new way.

Want to escape from those ho-hum stitch patterns you always use? We’re going to spend three days stitching for fun. The end result? A beast to join a parade. Imagination, clairvoyance, and experimentation are all in the mix. We’ll play with patterns and scribble new textures. Our focus will be on loosening up, finding our sense of humor, and playing the fool. All levels.
