Cazenovia Artist Reception: September 5 from 5-7 p.m.

Aquatint is a printmaking technique that produces tonal effects by using acid to etch into the printing plate, creating sunken areas that hold the ink.

“Sometimes new art forms fall right into your lap. I learned intaglio techniques, including etching and aquatinting, while working at Hamilton College. Hired as an assistant in the printmaking studio, I soon realized what a fun challenge it would be to delve into this somewhat antiquated artform, mixing science with art. Over the next four years, I invested in my own printmaking studio - learning with each accident, mistake and oops. The thrill of etching is pulling the first print to see if all those layers, lines and tones come together at long last.”

Schweinfurth Art Center is holding its fifth Member Show this fall, which features 127 works by talented artists who are members of the art center. The exhibition includes oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, photography, ceramics, sculptures, fiber art, and more.

"i solemnly swear” is an exhibition about the consequences of conscription and deployment into combat. Syracuse artist Paul Pearce was drafted into the US Army in 1967 and deployed to Vietnam in 1968. “I should never have been a soldier, and yet I was a good soldier,” Pearce says. “For this reason, I am haunted by what I did and what I witnessed. When people say, ‘Thank you for your service,’ my reply is, ‘Don’t thank me for my service; you don’t know what I did. My country made me do it and I was just a kid.’”

Set in the layered world of Najee Dorsey’s Poor People’s Campaign is a powerful collection of work grounded in the environmental struggles of today’s impoverished communities. Blending Southern nostalgia with digitally collaged speculative futures, Dorsey’s work unveils a future shaped by environmental racism, industrial pollution, and the resilience of those who endure these atrocities. This exhibition challenges viewers to confront what’s hidden in plain sight—smokestacks on the horizon, decaying landscapes, and children at play in dystopian backdrops, unaware, just going about their lives.

Each candid portrayal of a child, each scar of environmental injustice plaguing the earth, is a symbol of ongoing corporate greed, and a masterful fusion of futures transforming the landscape into an intimate battleground. Through these works, Dorsey challenges us to consider the true cost of progress and unchecked power.

The Villalobos Brothers are a GRAMMY Award-winning family band, recognized as one of the foremost Contemporary Mexican ensembles in the world. With their unique fusion of Mexican folk, jazz, and classical music, they have captivated audiences across the United States, Mexico, India, Russia, and Canada. Their music is deeply rooted in the traditions of Veracruz, showcasing a vibrant blend of Son Jarocho, Son Huasteco, and Latin Jazz. The Villalobos Brothers have mastered the art of crafting original compositions and arrangements that not only pay homage to the richness of Mexican folklore but also push the boundaries of musical exploration. The Villalobos Brothers have graced prestigious stages around the world, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Davies Symphony Hall, the Latin Grammy Awards, Montreal Jazz Festival, and the Ford Theatre in Hollywood, among many others. Their performances have garnered widespread praise, capturing the hearts of audiences with their virtuosic musicianship, infectious energy, and profound messages of love, brotherhood, and social justice.

Trinity United Methodist Church Nu 2 U and Bake Sale is planned for September 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a wide variety of items for sale; something for everyone, including delicious homemade baked goods. The Clothing Bag Sale (half-price sale on most other items) starts at 9 a.m. on September 20.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Human Concerns Food Pantry.

Anyone wishing to donate may bring the items to the church beginning September 8 until September 11 from 9 a.m. to noon, or call the church for arrangements on a different day or time. Please use the East Utica entrance as the sale is downstairs.

Show Statement:
"Like many artists who have come to New Mexico, I was immediately drawn to the distinctive Southwestern light. The beauty of the natural environment is evident to most people; however, my interest was to explore the more banal peripheral landscapes that often go unnoticed by the casual observer. I began by photographing color fields and geometric shapes. I was interested in the way light and shadow could spark complex narratives, and I quickly became aware that these isolated moments in the suburban landscape were rich with metaphor. Closed and open doors, empty parking lots and forgotten swimming pools drew me to a scene; yet it was my reactions to these objects and spaces that elicited interpretation and projection.

"As a psychotherapist, I learned the art of asking the question – in many ways, these photographs are an extension of that work. The symbols and spaces in my images are an invitation to explore a rich world that is concealed from consciousness. And the scenes are an enticement to contemplate narratives that have no remarkable life or history yet tap into something deeply familiar to our experience; often disturbing, sometimes amusing…unquestionably present."
