How do we reconcile our engineered past with an ecological future?

2025 Erie Canal Artists-in-Residence Sarah Cameron Sunde and Kari Varner explore the Canal from an environmental lens.

Kari Varner, a distinguished photographer and educator, explored key ecological sites along the canal, integrating harvested plants into her photographic artworks. Sarah Cameron Sunde, an innovative interdisciplinary artist, engaged with canal communities to create pieces that physically and ecologically connect with the canal. She also developed work in collaboration with Jeremy Dennis, a contemporary fine art photographer and an enrolled Tribal Member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation in Southampton, NY.

Cazenovia Artisans presents Eric Shutes' artwork in June, with a reception for the artist and guests on June 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. In Shifting Forms, the artist explores the delicate balance between tension and release—capturing the interplay of energy and calm through vibrant color, texture, and abstraction. Open to the public.

• Disrupt North Country 2.0: Saturday, June 13, 2026. All-day conference at Space featuring eight speakers, a "Future of Small Business" panel, and a wellness workshop.
• Weekend Pass Breakfast and Awards: Sunday, June 14, 2026. Group breakfast hosted at Front Door Diner with awards, raffles, and parting words.

The event kicks off at Outer Space, an outdoor Adirondack music venue in Old Forge, with the "Not Your Average Company Picnic." Designed for both summit-goers and locals, the picnic offers space for all to unwind. Leadership-themed table talks and yard games start the evening, with dinner from Archie’s Alley and live music by Part-Time Genius following.

Saturday’s programming is curated for leaders, small business owners, community builders, and changemakers. The day begins with "Disrupt North Country 2.0," an unconventional take on keynote presentations and part of the global DisruptHR movement. Hosted in over 250 cities worldwide, DisruptHR flips the script on traditional conferences: speakers get five minutes, 20 auto-advancing slides, and one bold idea to challenge the way we work and lead. Following lunch, the event rounds out with the "Future of Small Business" panel and an interactive wellness workshop. Weekend pass holders have additional opportunities for Adirondack exploration with exclusive outdoor excursions.

Many Auburnians often stop Dominic when they meet him and ask, "How did you end up in Auburn?!" So, Dominic decided to share his story with Auburn Public Theater for one night only in a cabaret spanning musical genres and decades of his life. From pop to Broadway with a little bit of country, featuring artists and shows like Adele, Taylor Swift, Kings of Leon, Hamilton, and Wicked, join Auburn Public Theater, Dominic, and music director Kristan Sheppard in the Main Stage to experience the twists, turns, and events that brought Dominic to Auburn, NY, and molded him into the person he is today. In this experimental workshop, students will learn lashing and chaotic weaving methods for building skeletal structures with rattan and bamboo. On these frameworks, explore methods for building skins with rice papers, pigmented and unpigmented gut, and recycled netting. Paintable graphite, acrylics, shellac and Japanese suminagashi marbling will further modify membrane surfaces and structures. A series of guided exercises will prompt students to invent unique, original sculptural forms.
